Dove Memorial Match
CMP\USAS
State Qualifier
River
Valley Sharpshooters hosted the 4th Annual CMP\USA
Shooting state qualifier on February 9th in
Chebanse, IL. The
match was dedicated to our former team member, Andrew Dove,
who was tragically killed in a car accident in September
2007.
The match
was fired by 80 individual competitors, some firing more than
one match. The IL
state qualifying matches were in 3-Position Air Rifle and
Progressive Position Air Pistol. The winning teams in
these events will be invited to the CMP\ USA Shooting National
Matches to be held in Anniston AL in July.
We will
have a precision, a sporter and 2 pistol air teams represent
IL. Waukegan High
School Rifle Team won the Precision category. Zion-Benton High
School Rifle Team won the Sporter category. Arlington Heights
one-handed position team won pistol and Sandy Ford Junior
Shooters won the advanced supported pistol position
match.
Some
participated in the International Air Rifle match and an Open
Air Pistol Match.
Winners have not yet been announced.

The match
was begun with a very nicely done rendition of our National
Anthem performed by Tabitha Mattox and Hannah
.
Several
members of the River Valley Sharpshooters shot their first
match at this event.
Braydon Coyer,
Kyle Lewis and Tabitha Mattox competed in Sporter
Air Rifle for the first time. Others who have fired
just a few matches prior to this were Katie Peters, Patrick
Hanners, Brian Pickering, Nick Pickering.
New to Air
Pistol with only a couple of matches under their belts were
Andrew Gersch and Luke Mattox, both of whom showed marked
improvement. Luke
Mattox, James Stack and Lorraine Maligaya will shoot pistol at
the National match.
We would
like to express our deepest appreciation for all who worked so
hard to make this event a success including those who helped
to set up and break down the range, those who donated and ran
the concession stand, those who scored targets and those who
help with stats.

Andrew
Doves family attended the match and brought a framed display
of the awards that Andrew had won as a competitor with River
Valley. Many of
the kids at the match knew Andrew and competed with him, but
even those who did not took time
to look at the awards and photos on display

Purpose
This club is dedicated to the training of
individuals in firearm safety and marksmanship skills. We will work to create
an atmosphere conducive to learning and enjoyment for all
involved.
Beginners are welcome at all levels. The club takes teams
and individual competitors to matches in all categories
throughout the season.
Postal match competitions are held once a month on our
own range.
Time & Place
The club will meet weekly on Monday
evenings from 6:30 to 9:00. The club will
function from early Oct
to mid-April. The range is
located at the Chebanse Youth Sports Center, 180 W. First
South St., Chebanse IL in the gym on the East side of the
building.
BB Gun
Boys and girls ages 8 through 10 learn the
responsibility of handling equipment, the discipline of the
sport and the fun of competition. Side benefits are
greater self-control and focus or concentration. All rifle disciplines
learn 3 positions: prone, standing and kneeling.
Sporter Air Rifle
Lighter weight compressed air rifles are
used with ages 11 through 14
Precision Air Rifle
Quality precision pellet compressed
air rifles are used with ages 14 and older.
Air
Pistol
We have added quality air pistols to the
club for older junior marksmen and adults.
Firearms & Equipment
All
equipment is provided. The club will
provide rifles, pistols, targets, pellets, safety glasses,
mats, kneeling rolls, stands and scopes and other necessary
equipment as appropriate for each discipline.
Coaching
Coaching the club are Ray and Tina Odle,
both NRA National Coach Development Staff, NRA Certified
Coaches in rifle and pistol, NRA Training Counselors in all
disciplines, and active competitors in outdoor smallbore
rifle, indoor air rifle and smallbore as well as pistol. At all levels, safety
is emphasized, range rules are enforced and discipline is
paramount. The
fundamentals of shot execution, a solid shooting position
(3-positions for sporter and precision and 4 for BB gun) and
rules of competition are taught as the group
advances.
Competition
We encourage all members to make a
commitment to competition this season. Although not
mandatory, competition is “being put in the game” and makes
practice meaningful.
We will have monthly postal matches fired on our range
and we will travel to away matches (for those ready to
compete) at least once a month. We will provide
transportation as necessary. Most away matches will
be on Saturday.
