Chebanse straddles the Iroquois/Kankakee County line.
Historical Notes(Taken from "Memories of Chebanse
1954)
The first school teacher was Miss Garlock.
In 1867, Chebanse voted to join Kankakee County but the Iroquois
county negative vote overruled.
The Illinois Central was built on Butterfield Trail, an old hog
and cattle route.
During the Civil War, R. J. Hanna bought some patriotic bunting
and station agent T. D. Williams cut a pattern and the ladies of
Chebanse did the sewing. The result was a homemade flag to fly
from the cupola of the old schoolhouse.
The
Edgar Bakery, in 1890, supplied all the towns from Chebanse to
Onarga with bread and pastries
Record
of the 1904 fire states that “reporters from three Kankakee Dailies
came down at 4:30 pm on the
Fast
Mail.” The fire took place at I am.
A dance hail once stood on the present location of the George
Lane residence (2nd North St & Oak) and a Baptist Church stood
next door.
Christian Meyer hauled stone
from Lehigh by wagon for the foundation of the Lutheran
Church
